The Final Countdown
With less than a week to go, the nerves are kicking in, and with no more opportunities left to train, we're hoping we're ready for it!!
We've hit the £1,000 mark on our JustGiving site for the Scotland team so a huge thanks to all who have sponsored us so far. Adding that together with the main JustGiving site for the event, we're set to raise a huge amount of money for Cancer Research UK which is great!
Cancer Research UK is the largest single funder of cancer research in Europe and is leading the world in finding new ways to prevent, detect and treat the disease. The charity receives virtually no government funding for research and is therefore reliant on the generosity of the public. Around 285,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK and Cancer Research UK works to improve understanding of cancer and develop better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.
If you've not yet sponsored us, please dig deep! Any amount of support you can give us, no matter how small, means a lot to all of us and especially to Cancer Research UK.

Team Scotland - 4 Abbeys Challenge
This 60 mile cycle was well documented following assertions from a certain Mr Slipper that our training was no more than a jaunt to the pub, and some tall tales made up over a gin or two…so three of us set out to prove him wrong! The 4 Abbeys Route covers a 55mile circular route of the Scottish Borders – Melrose (Abbey 1) to Dryburgh (Abbey 2) to Kelso (Abbey 3) to Jedburgh (Abbey 4) and back to Melrose. We took a couple of unfortunate and rather hilly wrong turns and added at least 5 miles to that total! It all adds to the training though, well that’s what Rob convinced us after leading the girls up a mile and a half hill in the wrong direction!! For the record Mr Slipper – these photographs have NOT been photoshopped!!
Team Scotland Training
Training has continued pretty steadily since that first challenge, and we’ve managed to cover quite a bit of Scotland over the weeks, including:
- North Berwick coastal route (50miles) – a nice easy ride out from Edinburgh to North Berwick on a sunny Sunday afternoon, with a relaxing lunch outside…then was the blustery return! We made it back significantly slower than the way out with a few choruses of cursing at the wind from Rob!
- Isle of Arran hill cycle challenge (40miles) featuring the now infamous “Hill of Death”. No photographs exist of such challenge, but be assured…it was epic!
- Pentland Hills circular (25miles) which began with a hill so steep that Caroline was convinced she might tip backwards off her bike – a tough one! This one has been a bit of a favourite with a couple of the team members
Team Scotland - the training begins
Having signed up to the C2C challenge without much thought to the effort required in training, the Team Scotland training regime began with some of us (Nik and Caroline) actually buy a bike - with only 3 months to go, probably a good idea!
Before attempting any cycling, it was necessary to integrate the bikes into our lives…this involved naming them (of course). Given 30 seconds to think about it, the girls named theirs Henry and Jim, whilst the boys weren’t so enthusiastic about this, with Rob eventually coming up with Bernard! So then it was time to actually get Henry Jim and Bernard, along with the others, out in the open and attempt a cycle!
There was no gentle easing ourselves into the cycling for Team Scotland, oh no - it was a challenging Pentlands route followed by an early morning start for a 50mile Glasgow to Edinburgh cycle along the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal, followed by a well earned relaxing beer whilst watching Scotland unsurprisingly being beaten by England in the final 6Nations match!
